Perhaps the album with the single biggest gap between initial commercial success and ultimate historical relevance, The Velvet Underground & Nico has become a legendary fountainhead of influence and inspiration.

Ok so… number 91. This is an album I must hear before I die. It feels like the first album that I really must here. There’s been some crackers preceding and some I’m sure that should not be missed, and some that are just so…. skippable. Maybe because the series of albums in the 80 to 90 range were such a dirge-fest. I consider myself a well listened music enthusiast – yet the Velvet Underground had passed me by. Maybe because we are all the product of our peers, and neither peers nor circumstance had led me to the yellow banana. I’m your first-time listener alluded to in the final minutes of the podcast episode. Of course I loved it. It is super complex, you cannot predict the next musical turn, and I’m sure a deep revelation into the musical soundscape of the time. It cannot be summarised properly, having just finished my first listen. I love the deep complex and confronting lyrics, so much softer in this time than in the late 60’s. Some of the sonic assault (Heroin, European Son) is jangly and annoying in headphones, but it’s probably the point. Thanks for your podcast
