249 Deep Purple – Made in Japan

Recorded over three nights in August 1972, Deep Purple’s Made in Japan was the record that brought the band to headliner status in the U.S. and elsewhere, and it remains a landmark in the history of heavy metal music.

The lead-in riff on “Smoke on the Water” is NOT a screw-up!!!! I really don’t see why you’d think that, there’s no flubbed notes, there’s no hesitation. When I first heard this as an 11 yr. old in ’73, I thought, “oh cool, they’re making things a little different live than on the studio version”, which is the mark of musicians who want to PLAY with their music while they’re playing. That’s a huge part of what makes live shows essential.
Ok, just had to get that off my chest. Carry on.
